I wrote Modem Answer one day when I missed a call to my data line because I forgot to turn the modem to auto-answer mode. By the time I realized the phone was ringing and I launched my telecommunications program to tell it to pick up the phone, I missed the call. By setting Modem Answer to your startup application, you will never miss a call again. Note: If your modem is not turned on, Modem Answer will not crash or anything but it obviously cannot set your modem to auto-answer mode and do what it is supposed to do.
Modem Answer is one of the simplest applications that anyone has probably created. It opens the modem port, sends the auto-answer modem string to the modem, closes the port, and quits. (It uses 300 baud so that it will work on all modems. The speed doesn’t matter at all and there is no advantage to Modem Answer using 2400 or 9600 baud.)
At first, I wrote this application in SuperCard but using the Build Application command makes Modem Answer into a huge program over 300k. I still have the SuperCard project if anyone is interested but since using SuperCard for this program was not a good choice I translated it to MPW Pascal. It is now much faster and also much smaller. It’s only about 2 K.
All proceeds generated from this simple utility will go to agencies that help with the recent earthquake in San Francisco. Please spread the word about this simple utility that I think is useful enough to warrant a donation of $5 even if it is so simple. If enough people send in their $5, maybe we really can help in this terrible disaster. I will not keep any amount of the $5 for myself. If you would like to register or want a copy of Modem Answer, send me a blank disk and a stamped envelope and I will send it to you. (Please format all disks before you send them to me.) Also, don’t send my high-density disks since I use the original Macintosh II and don’t have a SuperDrive. Please register and send me any electronic addresses you have and your mail address so I can inform you of any other programs that I write.
The File with the .p suffix is the MPW Pascal source code. If you aren't interested, just delete it and don't worry about it. If you are, feel free to use it after you register.
Thanks again,
Adam Stein
Remember, your $5 donation will go towards helping those in the San Francisco area. I will not profit from this simple utility.
